Pol Bury, 16 spheres, 16 cubes on 8 rows - 1966 Polychrome wood, cork, electric motor, 80 x 40 x 29, Tate, London

The assignment was to make an innovative composition with recordings of Bury's artworks. The five-member jury received 38 entries. The five-member jury, including Marc Jacobs (programmer Bozar Electronic) and producer Dijf Sanders, chose the composition "Menigma" by the Mirrounds Collective.

Mirrounds consists of Thomas van Walle, Joost Van Duppen and Gillis Van Der Wee. They find their inspiration in nature. In collaboration with other artists, they create installations with light, sounds and textiles, which interact in such a way that they evoke a moment of stillness.

“The Menigma composition was based on the sculpture ‘16 spheres, 16 cubes on 8 rows (1966) by Pol Bury. The cubes of the sculpture are linked to louder sounds, the spheres to softer sounds. This creates a sound matrix, from which sound interactions are distilled, which are then interwoven with ambient sounds. Like Bury’s recurring theme of slowness, Menigma tries to lure the listener into a different time zone. Violin bruitages provide a rich sound texture. The title "Menigma" is in fact a neologism: "M" is an abbreviation for Minuscule and refers to the insect noises that you perceive in Bury's sculptures. Enigma is synonymous with mystery. ”

Here are some comments on the winning entry:

Dijf Sanders: "Menigma is closest to the atmosphere of Pol Bury."

Marc Jacobs: “Mirrounds have created an ambitious composition and succeed in integrating instruments into a coherent whole. They stay true to the Bury universe, but they also go a step further. ”

Roel Vanhoeck (Jazz programmer BOZAR):

“Cracklingly creative”
